Living in an American campus, Roger Williams University

Roger Williams University is a "small" -only 4,000 students- American college. It is located in Bristol, Rhode Island. The Rhode Island is the smallest State of the USA. It is located on the North-East beautiful coast.

The first night we -my future roommate & I- arrived at RWU, we almost froze. I'm not kidding, -25°C... Time to go to bed, we had not sleep for 24 hours.
When we woke up, the same day, we discovered the nice -very very nice- view of our new flat. It suddenly improved our reaction to the cold weather.

A few days after our arrival at RWU, we were already used to the way of living of the American students. I'm not sure why, it was very easy to get used to it... or maybe the following elements are the explanation...

A great welcome,

A great Business School

...with an amazing library right in front of it

What should I say about the environment of the campus? The photos speak for itself...

 Great facilities...

I'm sure you understand now why it was so easy for me to get used to the way of living of the American students... ;)

The best things about the States -according to MCB..., which means me ;) -

As all countries there are drawbacks about living in the USA; but there are also many advantages!
Here are the things I like about the States...

-The most important, my American friends
-The baseball games
-and the Hockey games too...
-Getting the movies before everyone : "Oh by the way, I just watched the last Woody Allen, What do you think about it?  / Ah, I've not seen it again. In France, it's going to be deleted next June... of next year..."
-The basketball games
-Being sure that by going to the restaurant, you'll get enough food
-The doggy bags!
-Going to the mall on SUNDAY at 8:30 PM
-The buildings -I love all the clichés about the States-
-BURT'S BEES products
-The sweet and very respectful behaviours of the Americans
-The Ford Mustangs -1966, 1967 or 1968-
-The Ralph Lauren / Tommy Hilfiger shirts for 15$ -about 10€- at Marshalls
-Having teachers that graduated from Harvard or Stanford business schools
-The gallant behaviour of the American boys -and you think the French boys are romantic...-
-Charlotte Russe, Forever 21 & Victoria's Secret
-Having M&M's bags of 1Kg
-The country music, best love songs ever!
-The Cheesecake factory
-Becoming keen of technology : "When is the IPhone5 going to be sold? / Have you seen that Google just bought Motorola?! That's very smart of them... They'll be able to put their OS Android on all Motorola phones!"
-The boys wearing hats, so American :)
-The Muffins of Magnolia Bakery
-Going to the gym or the swimming-pool between two courses -I love the American campuses...-
-Waking up at RWU and having a breakfast in front of the Atlantic Ocean
-Having a Starbucks Coffee at each corner
-Hearing from the Americans that your French accent is so cute -it always makes me happy-
-Going to Boston or NYC for 30$, round-trip, -about 24€-
-The Pugs, so... indescribable
-Going shopping at "Century 21", New York: "Jeez! Look at that! A Donna Karan purse for 90 box!"
-My RWU bear
-The American sense of humour, I LOVE it!
-The American accent :)
-The American flag
-Everything with "American" in it...

The bias about the American food

Before leaving France I decided to eat as much french food as possible. The croissants, pains au chocolat, chocolats tout court, and every typical meals would indeed be missed when I would be in the States.
The USA is not a country famous for its food and, as a lot french people, I was even scared to take weight when living outthere. Guess what? I was all wrong!
The USA has amazing food, just different from the one we are used to eating in France. And as regards the weight, I lost 22 pounds, which is equal to 10kg!
Jeez... I just killed two big stereotyps about the States :)

What you should be eating in the States:

The Hamburgers:

My roommate and I decided to do a "Hamburger-benchmarking". This "Hamburger-benchmarking" lasted six months and was done in the following states: Rhode-Island, Massachusetts, New York, California and Texas.
Here are the results of our intensive researches:

The Top Three:

N°3

Our homemade hamburger, the most juicy.

N°2

The Guacamole hamburger from Newport.

N°1

The Southwest hamburger from the TGI Friday's located in Boston is the winner: the most tasteful, spicy and juicy.
NB: The TGI Friday's located in New York have to be avoided: expensive and not that good... ;)

The Pizzas:

The USA is ranked first in terms of consumption of pizzas, way before Italy (2nd) and France (3rd). So it seemed also important for my roommate and I to do a "Pizza-Benchmarking", haha. Here are the two best pizzerias we recommend:

N°2
 The pizzas from RWU's Lower Commons;
NB: You probably will have to become a Hawks -a RWU student- to get that one... ;)

N°1

The Deep Dish Pizza From UNO;
NB: No problem to get that pizza, UNO is located in different states and its owner is the one that created the deep dish pizza.

The "Pâtisseries":

It may be hard to find your Mille-Feuilles, Opéra or even éclair au chocolat in the US but don't worry, substitutes exist! and they are really good... :)

1) : The Cupcakes: very soft muffins with delicious cream on top of them, they always look, and taste good.
The best cupcakes can be found in Magnolia Bakery, New York:

2): The Cheesecakes: As the name suggests, the cheesecake is composed of, very light, cheese. All kinds of cheesecakes exist: Reese's Cheesecakes, Lemon Cheesecakes, Snickers Cheesecakes...

The best cheesecakes are found at "The Cheesecake Factory", that makes sense :) :

For the lovers of chocolate, this last cheesecake is the best one: the "Brownie Cheesecake", awesome... :)

3) : The Muffins:

According to my roommate, the best blueberry muffins are found in Dunkin Donuts.
More important information, the best CHOCOLATE muffins can be found at "Au Bon Pain":

4) : The Cookies: The best ones are definitely in "Au Levain" in New York!
Look at that... They melt in your hands :)

5) : The Sundaes:

The biggest ones -the sundaes!- are at Junior's, New York.
Please don't make fun of my "lovely" picture... I am on the starting blocks to eat my Cookie sundae...

Consequently, as you can see, you can find very interesting and tasteful food in the States. And don't worry about getting weight, if you adopt the way of life of most American, going to the gym at least once a week -yes I know, at the beginning it was hard for me too...-, you will be even fitter than you were in France!

As the food is a big part of a country's culture, I found important to writte this article about my "eating experience" in the USA.
I hope this article improved the way you consider American food and made you hungry, actually I'm going to eat right now :)

NB: As regards all the pictures of this article, I know it is weird to take pictures of what you're going to eat... But here is the thing: my roommate is passionated about cooking and she is very good at transferring its passion to others...

New York, New York

I lived one semester at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. At RWU, I studied Marketing, improved my English, became more patient thanks to the different team works and also discovered the American culture: "Work Hard, Play Hard" ;)
Landing at Newark Airport, we _my future & still unknown rommate and I_ had three hours to spend in the Big Apple before taking the Peter Pan bus to Providence. "What are the Must See of NYC before leaving?..."

The Empire State building,

Times Square,
Even in daylight... and,

The MMS Store, of course :)

Well, after doing this very "intellectual" tourism, I took the Peter Pan bus to Providence.
No, the Peter Pan bus does not look like that...

... This is Aladin's magic carpet! You really have to review your Disneys Classics...

The Peter Pan bus I took looked more like that :

I know.... I was kind of disappointed too.

Anyway, after having a 28 hours trip _I indeed woke up very early the day before... or was it even the day before the day before?... Exaustion..._   I still had to wait one hour, outside, in the freezing climate of Providence: -10 D. Fahrenheit, which is equal to about -25°C... I even did not know it was possible to be that cold!
"I Love the USA, I love the USA, I love the USA..."
